Abstract
The purpose of present study was to investigate prosodic control of high functioning autism(HFA) and normal children. Fifteen HFA and fifteen normal children, matched with their chronological age and gender, participated in this study. This study focused on the question and statement contrast. To analyze the speech recordings, average FO, slope of FO, average intensity, slope of intensity and duration measures were calculated for each syllable(S1, S2, S3) with each phrase. The results obtained in the present study were as follows: (1) HFA children was higher than normal children in FOave; (2) Two groups used a rising S3_FOslope for questions and a falling S3_FOslope for statements; (3) HFA children was higher than normal children in INTave; (4) Statistically significant effects in S2_INTave and S3_INTave for questions were found in groups. Statistically significant effects in S1_INTave for questions were not found in groups. But statistically significant effects in S1_INTave for statements were found in groups.; (5) Although speaker groups did not differ significantly in INTslope for questions, they did differ significantly in S3_INTslope for statements; (6) Although speaker groups did not differ significantly in duration for questions, they did differ significantly in S2 duration and S3 duration for statements.
